Childcare - are you ready to choose

Choosing childcare is one of the most important decisions you will make.

Parents choose childcare to:

  • look for work
  • do a training course
  • take some time for yourself.

Choosing childcare for your child and the thought of handing over your little one to a relative stranger is likely to make you feel a little anxious. However, high quality childcare will not only benefit children and help give them the best start in life, it will also provide peace of mind. It will mean you can concentrate on work, studies or time for you knowing your child is safe, and being well looked after.

There are different types of childcare to choose from and different childcare providers in Slough such as:

If you need information or support to find suitable childcare, please contact the Family Information Service on 01753 476589 or email fis@slough.gov.uk.

Early Years Education

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets standards for the learning, development and care of your child from birth to 5 years old.

All schools and Ofsted-registered early years providers must follow the EYFS, including childminders, preschools, nurseries and school reception classes.

The EYFS only applies to schools and early years providers in England.

Your child will mostly be taught through games and play.

The areas of learning are:

  • communication and language
  • physical development
  • personal, social and emotional development
  • literacy
  • mathematics
  • understanding the world
  • expressive arts and design.

Your child’s progress will be reviewed when they’re between 2 and 3 by an early years practitioner or health visitor.

Their class teacher will assess them at the end of the school year when they turn 5.

The assessment is based on classroom observation - your child won’t be tested. It uses the early learning goals, which can be found in GOV.UK - Early years foundation stage (EYFS) statutory framework.
