Special Educational Needs policy

SEND (Special Education Needs and Disabilities) Policy

It is a requirement of SEND 2014, the EYFS 2014 and THE DISCRIMINATION ACT 2010, that all childcare settings provide a policy and procedure which outlines their support structure which they have in place to provide suitable care and facilities for children with Additional Needs or Disabilities

PROCEDURE
This setting is based in a private house and therefore may not be suitable for children with certain additional needs or disabilities, while l will endeavour to accommodate each individual childs needs this may not be practical or possible. If it is in the childs best interests to find care in another setting l will help parents in any way l can to find alternative suitable care.

For children who attend the setting their individual needs will be assessed at the start of their care and all parties, parents, children and myself will be involved in discussions to ensure the care provided is in the childs best interest.

Permission will be sought from the parents to discuss the ongoing needs with other professionals concerned with the childs care or to gain advice or further help from them if needed.

All children will be treated with respect and their individual needs given regard at all times through respectful and sensitive interaction between myself and the other children who are cared for.

Assessments on all children will be undertaken on a regular basis and these will be discussed with the parents, any concerns which may arise will be dealt with by introducing a strategy which will ensure the childs welfare and development needs are being met at all times.

If I believe a Child needs additional support, I will speak to the Parents/Carers and ask permission to approach agencies which will support their Child. I will follow the graduated approach laid out in the Department for Education SEND Code of Practice to ensure every Child receives the best possible care & learning development.

I will share information about childrens learning & development and provide ideas for home learning with Parents/Carers as required by the EYFS.

I will attend appropriate training to ensure I have the skills and knowledge needed to support Children and their families.

Confidentiality will be respected at all times and only information required will be discussed or passed on to those who need to know.

I am the SENCO for this setting and will liaise with parents and any professionals.

Teaching and learning

I use the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum as a guide for each child's development.

I have a wide and varied selection of resources which are accessible as developmentally appropriate.

All planning is based around the child's own strengths and needs, using observations as a starting point to assess what they can do.

All planning is individually tailored to each child's developmental needs, rather than their age.

I use each child's interests and preferences to stimulate and encourage their participation and interest.

Children can explore and investigate confidently in my service - both indoors and out in the garden and on excursions away from our setting.

Identifying and assessing Special Educational Needs

As an early years education childminder I assess and observe all the children continually in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) set out by the government. I have discussions with you regarding your child and any concerns you may have about your child's development and progress.

All parents of children who are new to my service will have completed an All About Me sheet and using this and my own observations over the first few weeks l will chart their starting points (what they are able to do) and use this to plan and moniter their individual progress.

I talk with all my parents at the beginning and end of each day.

I share termly reports with parents of all my pre-school children.

A 2 year old development check is undertaken jointly with parents to review ongoing progress.

I have extensive child-development knowledge which I have gained through training and working within childcare for over 30 years, I use this knowledge when making judgments and decisions about any support l feel may be needed.Any concerns I have will be discussed with you initially, and with your permission, I would then speak to professionals to gain further specific advice.

If I have concerns about any child I would follow my Inclusion Policy.

Involving parents and children/young people in planning and reviewing progress

Joint working with parents is always mutually beneficial- especially for your child.

As a parent/carer you will be continually consulted and kept informed about your child's progress and achievements. This is done through daily discussions, daily diaries, and their individual folders containing continual observations and assessments which I use to make individual plans for each child . Photos are used in the daily diaries as a way of sharing your child's day.

I am happy to suggest activities for you to do with your child at home.

All concerns are shared firstly with you and with your agreement l will seek further advice from appropriate/relevant professionals.

Additional support

A decision on what type and how much support your child will receive is made following discussions with you the parent and after observations and assessments that I have made.

Also, taking into account where appropriate, the 2 year old check.

If further advice is required I will, with permission, seek advice from the local SENCO co-ordinator.

Extra activities

As a childminder I have an inclusive service and this is naturally extended to all activities outside too.

Before undertaking excursions I would seek your advice as you have the most up-to-date and relevant knowledge and information concerning your child's needs and requirements.

All trips are risk-assessed taking into consideration all children I have in my care.

Excursions are planned with your child's needs accounted for.

My Inclusion policy is always put into practice.

Meeting social and emotional needs of children/young people

Your child's overall well-being is my personal concern.

I am responsible for each child's safety and security - both physically and emotionally during their time in my care. Emotionally I aim to support and enhance each child's self-confidence and self-esteem. Physically I aim to keep them safe from harm.

I have a behaviour policy which I implement.

Positive behaviour is re-enforced and encouraged using praise.

Keeping up to date with knowledge and skills

I access specific training as the need arises to ensure my professional knowledge and development is continued.

I have previously undertaken training in areas such as; autism, schemas, behaviour management, attachment theory, supporting 2 year olds, disability equality training, communication language and literacy development, supporting children's emotional well-being.

I am trained in First-Aid, I have attended safe-guarding training,

I am NNEB (National Nursery Examination Board) trained.

I would also seek to identify if there are any young carers within the family and provide appropriate support and information sign posting them to the local Young Carers Support group.

Transitions

I have an admissions/settling-in policy which I follow for all new children attending my service.

Initial meetings are with both the parent/s and child, this gives us the opportunity get to know each other and creates a good environment for future discussions.

Once a parent has decided they would like their child to come to my service, we would then discuss a flexible settling-in time-table in the weeks/days leading up to the childs start date.

On the first meeting I also give you a copy of my handbook which includes all my policies and a permission sheet which needs to be signed.

Most importantly the settling-in period gives your child opportunities to become familiar and comfortable with me caring for them and also for them to; meet other children in my care, my family members and to feel comfortable and confident in their new surroundings.

I would ask you and your child about their individual likes, dislikes, fears, needs and comforters.

For children moving onto a new early years setting or school the professionals from these services are welcome to call me to discuss your child, or to visit them here in my home, if they wish to; with your written permission.

With your permission, the professionals can have access to your child's development folder.
