- Special Educational Needs policy
We provide an environment in which all children, including those with special educational needs (SEN), are supported to reach their full potential.
We have regard for the Special Educational Needs Code of Practice (2014).We ensure our provision is inclusive to all children with special educational needs.
We support parents and children with special educational needs.
We identify the specific needs of children with special educational needs and meet those needs through a range of SEN strategies with help from local authorities .
We work in partnership with parents and other agencies in meeting individual children's needs. We monitor and review our policy, practice and provision and, if necessary, make adjustments.
- Teaching and learning
Children’s individual choices and interests are observed, respected and developed. Mixture of child initiated activities) and adult led activities are provided. We plan activities around seven areas of learning and development. When a child is between the age of two and three, we review their progress and after discussing with parent we provide them with short written summary of their child’s development level.
- Identifying and assessing Special Educational Needs
We collect information from parents, then we observe children and make our own assessments. We share our assessments with parents. If required we contact local authority for advice and make referral with parental consent.
- Involving parents and children/young people in planning and reviewing progress
We involve parents in their child’s planning and reviewing process by arranging regular meetings with the child’s key person and any other professionals involved with the child. We carry out the 2 years old progress check. We share child’s individual progress, next steps, and set targets together. Where possible we ask children about choices, likes and dislikes and plan accordingly.
- Additional support
For children with special educational needs, we provide additional support with guidance from local authority. We adapt our setting and activities according to child's needs, development level and learning style.
- Extra activities
We arrange outings/trips, walks, get together for parents/carers.
We carry out a risk assessments by keeping all children’s individual needs in mind. We arrange to have a higher staff ratio and invite parents/carers to help out.
- Meeting social and emotional needs of children/young people
We plan a variety of activities under the learning area PSED and observe children’s participation and social skills. Then we plan further activities to meet their social and emotional needs.
We have ‘Achieving positive behaviour’ policy in place and which is shared with all staff members and parents.
- Keeping up to date with knowledge and skills
We run reflective practice and keep up to date knowledge of current curriculum guidance and legislations. Staff members are fully qualified and attend regular training.
- Transitions
To support children (including children with SEN) with transitions to others settings, we plan a variety of activities based around moving to school/other setting. E.g. dressing up in uniform, reading stories, role play, small world play and circle time. We also provide parents and the new setting with a transition report. We prepare children for their visit with parent to the new setting and after their visit we encourage children to share their experiences and views with other children and one to one talk time.
