- Special Educational Needs policy
It is a requirement of SEND 2015, the EYFS and the Discrimination Act 2010 that childcare settings provide a policy and procedure which outlines the support structure in place to provide suitable care and facilities for children with additional needs or disabilities.
My setting is based in a first floor flat and may not be suitable for some children with additional needs or disabilities. Therefore children in wheelchairs may not be able to access my setting.
Children's needs will be assessed at beginning of care and all parent/children/carers will be involved in discussions.
I will always obtain permission from parents to discuss the child's ongoing needs with other professionals concerned with the child's care to gain advice or help if needed.
All children will be treated with respect and their individual needs taken into consideration at all times.
Assessments are undertaken at regular intervals and discussed with parents. Concerns will be addressed as they arise and strategies discussed to ensure the child's needs are being met.
I am the SENCO for my setting.
- Teaching and learning
Children are given opportunities to:
- play in a warm and welcoming environment
- do their best and interact with other children.
All children regardless of race, religion or disability will be treated fairly and equally.
Teaching and learning will be tailored to each child's stage of development.
- Identifying and assessing Special Educational Needs
I will work closely with parents to identify a child's individual achievements and areas where they might need some more support.
Through regular discussion we will be able to talk about any concerns either myself, or parents have.
I follow the Early years foundation stage and make regular observations and assessments to track children's learning journey and progress.
If I think a child in my care has a special educational need I will:
- keep observational notes and share these with the child's parents
- discuss/find out what additional support is available
- keep all matters confidential
- work with the parents/carers to decide what action to take.
- Involving parents and children/young people in planning and reviewing progress
I encourage parent to discuss any concerns with me.
I will discuss any concerns I have with parents so we can then plan and review progress the child is making and if needed access additional support.
Parents are welcome to talk to me at any time.
- Additional support
If I feel a child needs additional support, with parents permission, I will contact my local area SENCO.
I will work alongside any other professionals involved in the care of a child such as speech and language therapists.
