Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA)
ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant) is an intervention used in schools and colleges across Britain to support the emotional needs of pupils.
Teaching assistants are trained to be ELSAs by an Educational Psychologist. They learn to develop, deliver, and evaluate short, targeted support programmes for pupils experiencing a wide range of emotional difficulties.
In Slough, ELSA training is offered to schools every year. It is delivered by one of Slough Borough Council’s Educational Psychologists and runs over 5 days.
After training the ELSAs receive regular ongoing support called ‘supervision’ from an educational psychologist in a small group once every half term.
ELSA courses are run across the country and so we are also part of the national network. For further information go to ELSA Network – Emotional Literacy Support Assistants.
