Early Intervention Youth Fund - Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC) for Thames Valley

In 2018 the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC) for Thames Valley bid for, and was successfully awarded, £822,000 from the Home Office’s Early Intervention Youth Fund (EIYF).

This funding is currently being used to deliver a programme of activities in partnership with organisations across Thames Valley to jointly tackle youth violence, vulnerability and exploitation in our communities.

The OPCC is leading on the programme through Community Safety Partnerships which include the police, youth offending teams, youth service providers, local authorities, secondary schools and charities.

What is being delivered?

The funding has been awarded to 14 providers to carry out a range of activities across Thames Valley - from broad reach awareness raising in schools to targeted interventions with young people already involved in gangs and knife crime. This includes:

  • ‘County Lines’ theatre tour – a play touring secondary schools across Thames Valley to raise young people’s awareness of County Lines, grooming, child sexual and criminal exploitation
  • Workshops for young people – sessions for 11 to 16 year olds focussing on gangs, knife crime and County Lines, challenging young people’s misconceptions and including personal testimony from victims and their families
  • ‘Gang Awareness’ training for professionals – interactive workshops delivered by ex-gang members to upskill staff working on the front line with young people who are being, or are at risk of being, exploited
  • Youth work to tackle school exclusions – youth professionals working in schools, supporting staff and young people to reduce exclusions and the subsequent risk of them being involved in criminal activity
  • Detached youth work – targeting young people where they ‘hang out’, giving them access to positive activities to reduce the likelihood of them becoming involved in gang crime and violence
  • Intensive youth work – an intensive intervention programme for vulnerable young people at risk of, or already involved in, criminal exploitation, grooming, serious youth violence and gangs. This will be tailored to the individual to provide the support they require and help them make better life choices
