Pre-schools and day nurseries

Two little girls playing in a nursery.

Pre-schools and day nurseries provide care and education for children under five years.

They may be:

  • privately run or
  • organised by community/voluntary groups or
  • run by the council as part of Children's Centres.

All preschools and nurseries must be registered and inspected by Ofsted on the Early Years Register.

Most offer the 15 hours per week of funded early education to children aged 3 & 4 years old, term time only.

Pre-schools offer:

  • places to children aged 2 to 5 years
  • sessions between 9am and 3pm, term time only.

Some offer extended hours and can be open during the school holidays.

Day nurseries:

  • offer places to children aged 6 weeks to 5 years
  • are ususally open full time between 7am to 7pm, all year round.
