Opening a bank account
Having your own bank account is really important if you want to manage your money and prepare for adult life.
If you:
- already have a child's bank account, it can be updated into a Young Person's account
- haven't got a bank account yet, talk to a trusted adult about setting one up.
It’s a good idea to have a current account and a savings account. You might find it helpful to set up online or mobile banking to help you manage your account.

Universal Credit for over 18s
Universal Credit is a benefit for people over 18.
It can support you if you:
- are working and on a low income
- out of work.

Housing options
If you are over 18 years, you have different types of living options.
You:
- may want to remain at home with your family. Your family can support this and you can still become more independent whilst living with your family.
- can check if you are eligible to join Slough Borough Council's housing register.
- could rent a flat or a house either on your own or with friends. You might be able to get some help with paying the rent from benefits. Check benefits that you might be able to get on GOV.UK.
