What can you say, what happens next (SEND)

A toddler with an early years staff member.

Our 'Who to contact if you think your child has SEND' page provides details of professionals you can speak to if you think your child has SEND.

The following may be a helpful basis for a conversation with the professional.

  • Say why you think your child has SEN.
  • Ask if your child learns or is developing at the same rate as others their age.
  • Find out what they and you can do to help.

The professional will:

  • discuss your concerns
  • tell you what they think
  • explain what kind of support your child may need
  • if they think it is appropriate, they can refer your child or young person to other services, with your permission.
