Support for siblings, young carers

Is your child a young carer?

Do they:

  • help out around the house by cooking or cleaning?
  • help someone to dress and get ready for the day?
  • look after the family budget and do the weekly food shop?
  • help to resolve upsets or breakdowns?

Check Slough Carers Support video on 'Who is a carer.' Please note: If you access the videos on YouTube the subtitles maybe auto generated. Some videos may not have subtitles. Some videos may autoplay.

A young carer is someone under the age of 18 who looks after or helps to look after someone. It might be their parent, sibling or close relative.

Young carers can do a lot of things for the person they look after and therefore may sometimes struggle to balance this responsibility with everything else in their life such as commitments at school, friends and things that they enjoy.

This is why it is really important to help young carers and their families to recognise the caring role they are doing and put support in place.

This can enable young carers to live happy, healthy lives whilst still supporting their loved one.

Slough Young Carers offers young carers:

  • advice
  • support
  • a break to enjoy a range of activities such as ice-skating, cinema, bowling and even day trips out.

They have two groups, one for children aged 5 to 10 and one for young people 11 to 19 (or up to 25 with SEN/disabilities).

Slough Young Carers also offer a monthly session for parents.

To find out more about what’s available and how to get involved, please:

Siblings and young carers can check our Young Carers page for other services that offer support.
