Supported learning (parents, carers - SEND)
Young people must stay in education or training until the age of 18.
This means that they decide to work full time (more than 20 hours a week), they will have to combine their job with some sort of training.
A good way to do this is to do a supported internship.
To start a supported internship, they need to:
- be aged 16 to 24
- have an education, health and care plan (EHC) - GOV.UK.
On a supported internship, young people will spend the majority of their time in the work place, developing skills for employment.
A supported internship includes:
- an unpaid work placement of at least 6 months
- support from a qualified job coach
- a personalised study programme, including the chance to study a relevant qualification, if suitable, and English and maths to an appropriate level.
